It was November 1975 when the American Diabetes Association (ADA) first declared November National Diabetes Awareness Month. While diabetes is a common condition among Americans, there are still many Americans that are unaware of what diabetes is, who is at risk, and what chronic conditions can result from the disease. For example, most Americans with diabetes have Type 2, which is highly preventable with diet, exercise, education, and understanding of the disease. As Director of Wellness at The Wellington Senior Living, it is up to me to spread awareness and provide education for diabetes.
A Type 1 diabetic is dependent on insulin for survival. A Type 2 diabetic is non-insulin dependent, although insulin may be used to control and manage the disease process. Some early signs and symptoms of diabetes include polyuria, excessive urination; polydipsia, excessive thirst; unexplained weight loss; and wounds that do not heal. Comorbidities that could arise because of diabetes are kidney disease, thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease, and hyperlipidemia.
Lifestyle changes that can be made to decrease the risk of diabetes include eating carbohydrates in moderation, exercising regularly, smoking cessation, managing your blood sugar with help from your practitioner, and managing your stress levels.
Some obstacles at-risk Americans face are getting needed medical treatment, getting supplies as needed, and poor self-monitoring of blood sugar readings.
We support our diabetic residents with a healthy lifestyle and encourage good meal choices and an active lifestyle.
